Bottom line: 100k errors a month, 5-person team
Assume your web and server apps together send 100,000 error events a month and five people need dashboard access. At public prices as of October 15, 2026, Sentry Team billed monthly, with overage on pay-as-you-go (PAYG), comes to about $47.13/month before tax. Bugsnag's public pricing page has you pick an event tier, so you have to read the tier price at checkout before you can compare on equal terms.
This article compares error-event cost only. Sentry tracing (spans), replays and logs, and Bugsnag Performance spans are billed separately and are excluded. When you compare real invoices, check which usage categories you have turned on in each product.
Events vs issues: You are billed for events (each occurrence your SDK sends). An issue on the dashboard is a group of similar events. One error that fires 100 times shows up as one issue but bills as 100 events.
Match the plans and billing units first
| Item | Sentry | Bugsnag |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Developer: 1 user, 5k errors/month | Free: 1 user, 7,500 events/month |
| Paid plan for a 5-person team | Team (unlimited users) or higher | Select or Preferred (unlimited users) |
| Included errors | Team and Business: 50k errors/month | The event tier you buy (Select from 50k, Preferred from 100k) |
| Base price | Team $26/mo billed annually, $29/mo billed monthly | No static price on the public page; check at checkout |
| When you run out | Reserved volume, then PAYG budget; after both, events are dropped (not billed) | Daily quota; choose "Capture every event" or "Rate limiting" |
| Lookback | Developer 30 days, Team and Business up to 90 days | Check per-plan retention on the pricing page |
Both free plans are single-user, so neither works for a team of five. Sources: Sentry pricing, Sentry billing docs, Bugsnag pricing, Bugsnag billing docs.
Cost at 10k, 100k and 500k errors a month
Assumptions: Sentry Team billed monthly at $29, overage on PAYG, USD before tax. Team PAYG rates are $0.0003625 per error for >50k–100k and $0.0002188 for >100k–500k (official table; Sentry notes the per-unit prices are rounded). No rounding until the final figure.
| Monthly errors | Sentry Team (monthly + PAYG) | Bugsnag |
|---|---|---|
| 10k | $29 + $0 = $29.00 | Price of the lowest Select tier (50k) |
| 100k | $29 + 50k × $0.0003625 = $47.13 | Price of Select 150k or Preferred 100k |
| 500k | $29 + $18.125 + 400k × $0.0002188 = $134.65 | Price of the 500k tier, plus check the daily quota |
With reserved volume instead of PAYG, Team rates drop to $0.00029 (>50k–100k) and $0.000175 (>100k–500k): $43.50 for 100k and $113.50 for 500k. Unused reserved volume expires at the end of each billing month, so if your volume swings a lot, count the leftover too. Annual billing also lowers the base to $26/month.
What gets stored on a spike day: the difference that matters most
Two teams with the same monthly total can get different results if one of them gets its errors in a single day.
- Sentry: once reserved volume and the PAYG budget are used up, further data is dropped and not charged, and you lose monitoring for the rest of the billing cycle. You can raise the budget under Settings → Subscription; it usually takes effect within minutes (24 hours at most). Advanced quota management comes with Business.
- Bugsnag "Capture every event": events over the daily quota are saved at no extra cost, but if you exceed the daily limit more than 3 times in a rolling 30 days, you are automatically upgraded to the next tier. Billing contacts are emailed each time.
- Bugsnag "Rate limiting": events over the daily quota are rate-limited. Quota keeps accruing through the day, so you keep partial coverage, but dashboard counts will understate the size of an incident.
Also, minidump events (Electron, Breakpad, Crashpad) count as 5 events each for Bugsnag billing. If you ship a desktop app, don't plug crash counts straight into the math.
Running a fair 5-person trial
Both offer 14-day trials (new Sentry accounts get a Business trial; Bugsnag trials run on Enterprise). During the trial, send the same errors from the same web and server apps to both, and fill in this table with measurements:
| Criterion | How to test | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| SDK setup time | Time from install to first test exception to source maps working, web and server separately | Both apps done |
| Grouping and alert noise | Send 100 copies of one error + 20 events you intend to ignore | Few issues and alerts, nothing important lost |
| PII scrubbing | Send events containing a fake email and token | Removed in the SDK before sending (separate from post-ingest handling) |
| Spike handling | Exceed one day's quota on purpose | What was stored or dropped, and which alerts fired |
| Weekly overhead | Log time spent on alert triage and quota checks | Score only with real numbers |
Bugsnag's post-ingest sensitive data management is listed as an Enterprise feature. Don't mark it as passed for Select or Preferred.
Diagnosis order: errors missing, or a sudden surge
- SDK init and DSN/API key: send one test exception and read the SDK debug log.
- Environment and release filters: make sure the event's environment and release match the dashboard query.
- Network response: check the outgoing request and status code in browser devtools or server logs. No request at all means back to step 1.
- Quota and limits: a
429from Sentry means quota exhausted, spike protection or a per-key rate limit; the Stats page shows the drop reason. For Bugsnag, check the daily quota and the overage setting. - Filters and ignore rules: if the send succeeded but the event isn't listed, check inbound filters, ignore rules and the time range.
One page to fill in before you sign
- Real quotes: for Sentry, your billing cycle, PAYG budget and whether you are on a legacy (transaction-based) plan; for Bugsnag, the Select/Preferred tier price and its daily quota.
- Daily peaks: not just the monthly total but the recent daily maximum and how often you spike. Apply Bugsnag's "more than 3 times in 30 days" rule to it.
- Capture priority: when you hit the limit, must everything be kept, or is throttling acceptable?
- Tax: both vendors list prices before tax.
FAQ
Q. Is Sentry always $47.13 at 100k errors a month? A. No. That's a pre-tax estimate using Team at $29 monthly plus PAYG rates. Annual billing, reserved volume, other usage categories and legacy plans change it.
Q. Does Sentry charge overage once the budget runs out? A. No. Data sent after reserved volume and the PAYG budget are used up is dropped and not billed, but you lose monitoring for the rest of the cycle.
Q. Does going over Bugsnag's daily quota cost more right away? A. With "Capture every event", overage is stored at no extra cost, but more than 3 overages in 30 days triggers an automatic upgrade to the next tier. With "Rate limiting", some events are throttled instead.
